Why Learn Life Skills
I would start this blog with a huge shout-out to all my readers who always takeout the time to read and inspire me to write more by generously forwarding and sharing the blog with others. Together, we are building a brighter society. A lot of the readers wanted to read more as to why these life skills are so important in today’s world. Let us throw some light on why we need more than ever before to equip our kids with skills along with education.
Let me go back to my previous blog on Life Skills, where I quoted an example of my dad and myself. My dad has led a successful career as a Lawyer and a Chartered Secretary, and he retired doing the same thing. He never found the need to upskill himself. The change, in those days, was a slow process. If you are decently educated, you could live a comfortable life without feeling the pinching need to upskill yourself. Let us compare this with the life of a software engineer. You might start your career with People Soft Technology and be phenomenally successful, but can you end your career with only People Soft? The technology changes, the same software engineer would have to upskill himself with let’s say Oracle or Hyperion. The reason is: change is occurring at a fast pace. We must teach our kids to learn, unlearn and relearn. Not only in the technology field, I can quote numerous examples of professions where we need to constantly upskill ourselves to be in business. Teachers had to change the way they teach overnight due to COVID. The financial industry never would have work from home options, but not anymore.
When we say that the world is changing at a faster pace, we also must consider that it requires us to adapt to this change faster than before. It would be difficult for us to correctly foresee how our children’s lives would be and we cannot prepare them for each situation in their lives. We can only equip them with tools that would help them to tackle every situation in life. If they are resilient, they would rise from their own ashes. If they are problem solvers, they would view every problem as an opportunity. If they are great leaders, they would always lead by example and raise others along with themselves. If we have taught these skills to them, we can be rest assured that they would deal with all their situations wisely. Life Skills are the only constant in this ever-transient world.
At Success Surfers, we have made it extremely easy for the students to incorporate life skills into their learning experiences through activity and value-based workshops, seminars, and personal counseling. Imagine, how exciting it is to practice our listening skills while working on a commercial or a skit! Some skills require role play, some require storytelling, some would require students to pen their ideas, some require them to think deeply and some require them to speak freely. We have thoughtfully designed our workshops with all these activities which enhances their Rhetoric skills as well as Personal Development Skills. Students enjoy the experience, and the learning stays with them lifelong. We have coached hundreds of students and still counting. A common feedback that we get from all the students, be it an Elementary kid or a Middle schooler or a High schooler is that: “This program is fun and it pushes us to think differently about ourselves”.
Let us all skill our kids along with educating them and make this world a better place.
Stay tuned for more….
